Differentiating Products on the
Unattended Salesroom Floor

Name: Duet Dance

Client: Whirlpool

Date: December, 2009

As a Center for Creative Studies graduate student, dStudio74 partner, Cynthia Naughton created the Whirlpool Duet Dance as part of an Interactive Design class. Whirlpool Corporation came to the school and presented graduate students with the question: How do you differentiate their products from other brands on big box salesroom floors that are unattended by sales staff.

The solution: Whirlpool Duet Dance. An interactive screen is placed on the Duet system with a screen that plays a dance routine from famous dancers Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers to attract peoples initial attention. Simple dance steps in a “Maurray Dance School” style add whimsy to the floor and further attracts the attention of customers.

On the TV touch screen a button invites customers to interact with the screen. A video appears but the dance moves to spills and dirt and stains that happen in a day set to the Blue Danube Waltz. This portion of the interactive presents the potential customer with important features of the Duet system that differentiates it from other systems on the floor.

1.–4. The interactive video continues by inviting users to find the best washer and dryer pair for their needs through a series of simple short questions.  As the user hits the arrow button at the lower right of the screen the washer and dryer pair move off the screen and three sizes of laundry baskets enter the screen. The user then touches the basket that best suits them.

5.–8. The example, left, shows what happens when the user chooses the largest basket. Laundry falls from above and the other two baskets leave the screen. Press the arrow at lower right and the right washer and dryer for large laundry loads appears.

9. When the washer and dryer appear the user will have the option of pressing the color swatches to visually see the color options: red, silver or white.

10.–11. Press the arrow button and the images of the duet set leave the screen and come back in zoomed to reveal all the features of the machines.

12. The user will be able to virtually press buttons on the machines where a popup button reveals its features.
